You smell gas: leave, call 911 and SoCalGas. Harborline does not work on gas

If you smell gas, do this first

A gas smell is a life-safety issue, not a plumbing call. If you smell gas anywhere in or near your home, leave the building immediately. Do not turn light switches on or off, do not use your phone inside the house, and do not try to find the source yourself.

Who to call, in order

  • Call 911 if the smell is strong or you feel unwell.
  • Call SoCalGas at their emergency line to report the leak and get it shut off safely.
  • Only after the gas company confirms the situation is safe, call Harborline if there is also water-side work needed.

We say this plainly because it matters: Harborline Plumbing does not perform gas line work. We are licensed for water, drain, and sewer systems. Any technician who tells you otherwise on our behalf is not representing us correctly, and you should hang up and call our dispatch number directly to confirm.

What we can help with once gas is handled

After SoCalGas or the fire department has made the area safe, there are times we can help on the water side of the same appliance, most often a water heater. Examples include capping or disconnecting the cold water inlet to a water heater that is being replaced, or plumbing-side work needed to remove and reinstall an appliance once a licensed gas technician has handled the gas connection itself.

We will never ask you to bypass a gas shutoff or work around an active gas concern. If SoCalGas has red-tagged an appliance, that tag stays in place until they or a licensed gas fitter clears it, regardless of what plumbing work is happening nearby.

After the gas company clears the scene

Once you have the all-clear, call our dispatch line and explain what SoCalGas found and what work remains. We will schedule the right technician and be upfront about what falls inside our license and what does not. If a water heater or other gas appliance needs replacement, expect that job to also involve a permit, which we will walk you through separately.

Your safety comes first, every time, before any appointment, quote, or sale. If you are ever unsure whether something is a gas issue or a water issue, treat it as gas, leave the area, and let the professionals sort it out on-site.
